How To ~ Prepare for QuikPic

QuikPic is a Friesens yearbook program that automates the layout procedure. The catch is that all components must be submitted in a specific format. The general format is listed below. Printout a marking sheet for Camera Ready or QuikPic pages
Choose a layout from the QuikPic Layout Book
record the template number. Odd template numbers only work on odd numbered pages and even numbers on even pages. Find out what is on the page opposite yours to make a good compliment.
Enter the template number in the QuikPic software
you can modify more than one page at a time (odd # on odd pages).
Choose images
imagine how you will have to crop the image to fit it into the layout shape. For example use a wider space for team shots and taller spaces for one or two people.
Use Photoshop to change picture mode
grayscale for Black and White, CMYK for color images
Use Photoshop to change resolution and resize images
  • change resolution to 266dpi for Black and White (300dpi for color).
  • change size in dialogue box to match QuikPic layout in Picas, you can adjust width or height, but not both.
  • crop image to final size.
  • if you want to redo your sizing, close the image file without saving and reopen.
Use Photoshop to change brightness and contrast
adjust brightness and contrast if image is too dark.
Use Photoshop to printout adjusted pictures
printout will match QuikPic frame exactly if you did everything right. If not try again.
Move pictures to "shipped out" directory to avoid duplication.
  • use "Save a Copy..." in PhotoShop to convert image to filename.tif
  • use "Save As..." in PhotoShop to save to the "Shipped out" directory
  • use the delete key (when files are displayed) to remove the image from the other directory so nobody else uses the image
Enter the copy text in the QuikPic software
do not change the font size or type. All pages of the yearbook need to look the same.
Printout finished copy for proofing
get an adult to check for grammar, typos, and other errors.
When proofed make corrections and reprint 2 copies
  • copy #1 goes into the Friesens envelope (DO NOT SEAL).
  • copy #2 goes into backup binder with images glued in place for reference.
Binder copy must include
  • filename of each image written beside image
  • your name written on bottom of page
  • computer number written on bottom of page
  • QuikPic template number written on bottom of page
