Leadership skills to learn
Choose for objective reasons not personal bias. "Make
friends of your staff members...not staff members of your friends.
Remember that the yearbook belongs to the school not to the
staff. The staff only publishes the yearbook for its reading public.
Share information with the staff and with the school. Your
success is their success.
Treat all staff members as equals regardless of their
roles. Leave your ego at home.
Be organized. A good deal of help might exist with
specialization and accountability
Do proper planning around deadlines. A time line is a good
idea for completing responsibilities
If you give a staff member a job to do - let them do it, or
tell them why a change needed to be made.
Communicate needs and responsibilities with those expected
to do the job. Make it clear what you need done.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes and admit them. Sometimes
we can learn a great deal from our mistakes.
Don't exaggerate problems...not everything is a crisis. Be
willing to aid each other when a problem occurs.
Don't become fixed on an earlier decision...decisions can
be changed and improved on.
Be humble and willing to accept criticism and help.
Criticism needn't be considered an attack on you.
Do not procrastinate...what is put off until tomorrow
frequently does not get done.
Be enthusiastic and optimistic. Pessimistic people slow
down progress
Meet deadlines! Too many people are counting on you to do
your job. Your'e part of a publishing team.
Recognize the efforts of all staff members in some
way. Have fun with the staff too
Some ideas for additional topics/sections are:
